FROM THE DESK OF PAMELA BRUNER

The 5 Dumbest Business Statements

I heard this week

I talk to a lot of people.

And they?re not all at an advanced level of business, bless their hearts. (?Bless their hearts? is something you can say in the south that allows you to say something, well? derogatory. Be sure to say it with a strong, fake southern accent.)

I talk to a lot of people.

And they?re not all at an advanced level of business, bless their hearts. (?Bless their hearts? is something you can say in the south that allows you to say something, well? derogatory. Be sure to say it with a strong, fake southern accent.)

So in the interest of education & humor, I thought I?d share a few of the crazier things that I heard.

Here are the 5 dumbest business statements (and why they?re not a good idea.)

1)??I don?t want to improve my brand or my offers. Can I just run ads without worrying about all that??

Only if you want to throw money down the drain.?

The success of ads is measured partly on what happens AFTER your ideal client responds to your ads. That means that your client has to like your message. Your client has to take action on your invitations.

Your client has to be willing to spend money, and enough money, to make your ads work.?

Doing ads without making sure that the rest of the system is in place, is very much like installing a faucet but not bothering to hook it up to plumbing. Not much is going to come out.

2)??I just want to serve people, I don?t care about making money?

This one?s going to get me in trouble. I get that.

To be fair, this is a beautiful sentiment.?

There was a TV show a couple of decades ago called ?The Equalizer?. He helped the downtrodden, and never got paid. I nicknamed him the ?professional friend.?

If you want to be a professional friend, that?s awesome! Go volunteer with a charity. Give money away (I do!)?

But run your business like a business. You can both help people, AND make money. Money is the lifeblood of your business. Saying ?I just want to serve people, and I don?t care about making money? in the context of a business is like saying ?I just want to be a healthy and vibrant human, but don?t particularly care about whether I ever eat food again??

3) ?I just FEEL that this is a good idea…?

This is only dumb in context because you definitely want to pay attention to your feelings in business!?

But there are two things you need in addition to feelings:

Training, and data.

It?s dumb if you ignore the data, and ignore those who are more successful than you.??

Just because something resonates with you doesn?t mean it will resonate with your ideal client. Because you buy in a certain way, it doesn?t mean your ideal client will buy in that same way. You need to train yourself to think like a marketer and look at data of what?s working and what?s not.

Get the training, listen to those who know more, and look at the data. What?s the latest thing that has worked for you?

4) ?I read about this awesome thing that brought someone a gazillion dollars with no work. Can you do that for me??

Um, no.

I?m not denying that something amazing might have happened to that lucky individual.?

Some people win the lottery. Some people get struck by lightning. Trying to duplicate an outlier?s success keeps you chasing shortcuts, rather than doing the work of setting up a solid system that has the highest chance of success.

5)??I just want to do what I do in business, and not do the marketing and sales piece.?

Good for you for knowing what you want! (Sorry, that?s sarcastic.)

If you don?t want to do marketing and sales, then you?re probably better off working for someone else, rather than being an entrepreneur.

That may seem harsh, but I?d rather save you months and years of struggle.

This statement CAN be made an awesome, brilliant statement if it?s followed by ?But I?m willing to learn to do whatever I need to do to succeed.??

What?s the craziest thing YOU?VE heard this week?
