What selling 49,568 CDs taught me about business
Before I was a business coach, I was a professional Celtic harpist. (If you Google my name, and “music,” there are far too many pictures of me with long curly hair, dressed like Stevie Nicks.)
During my music career, I sold a lot of
Owning Passions & Chasing Them
“Oh, I wish I could play the harp,” someone would sigh to me after a performance.
I always said, “You can learn!” in response, but 99% of them never did. There’s a perception that learning the harp is really difficult. I don’t believe that, but it is a process, and you have to put in the time and practice.
Yet in business, the industry keeps saying, “It’s easy! All you have to do is learn this one thing, and everything will be perfect for you.”
Sorry. Bulls&*t. I don’t cuss much (with or without the symbols), but I’ve got to tell the truth on this.
You see, you COULD approach learning music by saying, “I just want to learn one song.” You may impress people for 5 minutes, but you’re not a musician. And anytime you’re asked to play anything more than that one song, you’re lost.
Or you can learn to be a musician. It’s a longer, more challenging road, but infinitely more rewarding.
Use a Variety of Skillsets
It’s like that in business. Have you been wondering why the one or two “songs” that you’ve learned haven’t built your business so far? You can learn one trick, and it may bolster you for a little while, but it won’t help you build a business that truly makes a difference in people’s lives.
As a musician, I never offered to teach someone to “just learn one song.”
As a business coach, I’m frustrated by those who want to teach “just this one business trick.”
If you’re curious about what it takes to actually be a transformational business owner to make a huge difference in people’s lives, and be very well-paid for what you do, you can book a ticket to my live event: Transform!
Because I think you care enough about the difference that you want to make, to take the high road. Let’s not succumb to the easier route and keep serving a couple of people a month. Let’s do this right.
What you do is too important for you not to make all the money you want, have the impact in people’s lives that you want, and make the difference that you want in the world.
